After the Divorce: I Found My Prince at the… Bus Stop!

Hey love, you wont believe how my life turned upside down two years ago. My dad passed away and after twenty years of marriage I finally got a divorce. I ended up moving back into my old dads cottage in the Cotswolds because Id been laid off, and I was just shy of forty, thinking thered be no chance of landing a decent job or finding someone new.

Things kept going wrong, one after another. The roof, patched up by a local handyman, started leaking badly and I was too exhausted to even haul firewood. The contractors who came to replace the windows never finished the job, so drafts sneaked in everywhere. To keep warm I was gathering pine cones and using a stack of old books as kindling for the stove. Then the power went out and I had to turn the heating off completely.

The bloke who runs the pub opposite started popping up with all sorts of helpful offers. I wasnt sure whether to laugh or cry. I thought things couldnt get any worse, and then, out of the blue, everything started to look up.

One chilly morning I was waiting at the village bus stop when a dusty old bus pulled up and a guy stepped off. Hed got a shaggy mop of hair, was dressed in work overalls, and worked as a roofer. He asked if I needed a hand, and I admitted I did, but I had nothing to pay him with. He just said, When youre back on your feet well sort it out.

He fixed the leaky roof, the busted tap, the water meter, the garden fence, the steps and even the cracked windows. One night, when the frost was at its worst, I walked into the living room to find a cosy fire crackling and a steaming mug of herbal tea waiting for me on the table. It was like a miracle for my frozen throat and chilly feet.

I knew right then that he was my hero, but hes so modest I wont even mention his name the village is tiny and everyone knows him anyway. My cottage and garden have been completely transformed you can really see the touch of a steady, capable hand.

Now with my prince around, the house feels warm, Im genuinely happy, and the only thing Im scared of is losing him. Talk soon.
